Africa is rich in knowledge, talent, and innovation — yet millions of people remain disconnected from information that could change their lives. It is not that the knowledge does not exist. Research institutions, governments, NGOs, and universities produce it constantly. It is that this knowledge sits trapped in reports, PDFs, and audio recordings — almost always in a language, dialect, or format that never reaches the people who need it most.

A real example: a 40-page fall-armyworm control guide from Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture exists only as an English PDF. A Dholuo-speaking smallholder farmer in rural Kenya may never see it — let alone be able to use it.

AVIA exists to close that gap: not by creating new knowledge, but by making the knowledge that already exists actually reach people, in a form they can use.

What AVIA does

AVIA is an AI-powered speech-to-speech translation platform designed for African languages, launching with AVIA Agri, an agriculture-focused solution. A farmer speaks a question in their local language, the platform transcribes the speech, understands the intent, retrieves verified agricultural knowledge, and delivers a spoken response in the same language.

Rather than relying on generic machine translation, AVIA grounds every response using a domain-specific agricultural knowledge base developed with language experts, agronomists, and community contributors. This ensures that technical agricultural terms, regional expressions, and local dialect variations are translated accurately and consistently.

Scope and timeline

AVIA Agri is the first product within the broader AVIA ecosystem. Development is currently focused on agriculture across eight African languages:
